About

detail from the soutar houseSince 2000, when Brian McCabe took over from Carl Macdougall as Writer in Residence for Perth and Kinross Council, based at William Soutar’s former home in Wilson Street, Perth, local writers have been meeting and sharing their work in Willie’s Room.

Under the watchful eye of Willie’s portrait and the expert guidance of Brian McCabe and his successor, Ajay Close, writers of all disciplines and genres have developed their literary interests and talents in a supportive and friendly atmosphere, reading and critiquing each other’s work and sharing information about the business of writing.

Many members of what eventually became known as the Soutar  House Writers Group, including Linda Cracknell and Tim Turnbull, have gone on to publication and further literary success, seeing their stories and poems featured in magazines, anthologies, pamphlet and book form and on the winners’ lists of competitions far and wide. The current crop of Soutar Writers are no exception.

Currently, as we do not have a writer in residence in post, the group meets in the Soutar House, Wilson Street, on alternate Wednesdays. If you are interested in membership, please email our secretary via the Contact page.
